How to Prepare Roses for Winter

Roses grow best in full sun, but not in positions which are too hot or too dry. If you grow roses against a south-facing wall, then they’ll need extra irrigation. You should also bear in mind that even in winter the soil may dry out quickly in the sun, which is equally undesirable.

Plant roses in an open, well- ventilated position in a bed or border. Don’t plant them too close to large trees and shrubs, as these will deprive the roots of water and rain dripping onto the leaves will cause unsightly disease spot.

Generally speaking, roses should riot be planted in north-facing or shady gardens, though there are many varieties which tolerate semi-shade and can manage on only a few hours’ sun a day. Dark red varieties should always be planted in semi-shade, as this helps to prevent them from fading in the direct sunlight.

Don’t plant roses where rhododendrons and other lime-hating plants are growing, as roses dislike very acid soils. They’ll grow well in slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline soils, with a pH of between about 6.4 and 7.5. If you’re in any doubt, test the soil before planting (and at periodic intervals thereafter). Soil testing kits are inexpensive, widely available and easy to use, and show the lime, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiencies of the soil.

Roses are fairly tolerant of most soil conditions. Ideally, they should be grown in deep, well-drained humus-rich soil; so dig in some well-rotted manure or compost before planting roses. The one thing they do need is plenty of water, though they won’t thrive in soil which is permanently damp.

With these considerations in mind, you can plan your rose garden accordingly and produce the finest roses in your neighborhood!
